Light Adjustable Lens (LAL)

At Clarity Eye Center

Customize Your Vision with the Light Adjustable Lens

At Clarity Eye Center, we’re proud to offer the Light Adjustable Lens™—the only cataract lens that can be customized after surgery. Once your eye has healed, gentle UV light treatments allow us to fine-tune your vision based on your personal preferences and lifestyle needs. This means sharper, more precise vision and a greater chance of achieving 20/20 results without glasses.

Your Vision, Perfected After Surgery

The Light Adjustable Lens™ (LAL®) is the only intraocular lens that can be customized after cataract surgery, giving you and your doctor the ability to fine-tune your vision once your eye has healed. In an FDA study of 600 patients, those who received the LAL were twice as likely to achieve clear, glasses-free vision compared to standard lenses. Cataract surgery with the LAL follows the same safe procedure as traditional lenses, and after surgery, you’ll wear UV-protective glasses to ensure your customized lens remains stable while your vision is being perfected.

How the Light Adjustable Lens Works

Patient Journey

Photosensitive Material + UV Light

A precise prescription of UV light is delivered the light adjustable lens to adjust and refine the range of vision and astigmatism correction to achieve your desired vision.

Custom Adjustments with the LDD™

After your eye heals, your doctor uses the Light Delivery Device™ (LDD) to deliver controlled UV light to reshape your lens. These in-office treatments let you preview different vision outcomes and choose what works best for you.

Flexible Treatment Schedule

Typically, patients undergo 1–3 light treatments spaced 1-2 weeks apart, followed by two “lock-in” treatments to permanently secure the final prescription.

Permanent, Lasting Vision

Once the final “lock-in” treatments are done, the lens’s shape is set — and you no longer need to wear the UV-protective glasses. The adjustments are stable and designed to last a lifetime.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL®) is made of a special photosensitive material that changes shape and power of the implanted lens in response to ultraviolet (UV) light. The light treatments are delivered by the RxSight Light Delivery Device (LDD) which are done in your doctor’s office. What makes the Light Adjustable Lens so unique is that these changes are made to the lens after it has been implanted in your eye and you have healed from surgery.

Please follow all instructions provided to you by your eye doctor and staff, including use of the UV-blocking glasses that will be provided to you. As with any cataract surgery, your vision may not be perfect after surgery. While your eye doctor selected the lens they anticipated would give you the best possible vision, it was only an estimate. Fortunately, you have selected the Light Adjustable Lens! In the following weeks, you and your eye doctor will work together to optimize your vision. Please make sure to pay close attention to your vision and be prepared to discuss preferences with your eye doctor.

The UV-blocking glasses you are provided with protect the Light Adjustable Lens from UV light sources other than the LDD that your doctor will use to optimize your vision. Exposing the Light Adjustable Lens to other UV light sources can potentially change the lens correction in an uncontrolled manner. We ask that our LAL patients wear their RxSight-provided tinted sunglasses at all times while outdoors, during the LDD treatment process.

The UV-blocking glasses should be worn at all times until your eye doctor tells you that you no longer need to wear them (usually 24 hours after your final light treatment). Total wear is typically about 4-5 weeks in duration, however, this may vary depending on the number of light treatments delivered.

No. You should wear the UV-blocking glasses provided to you. These glasses have a special protective coating that no other glasses have.

Please notify your eye doctor/clinic as soon as possible if one of your two pairs of UV-blocking glasses are lost, damaged or unwearable, and then continue to wear the other pair. If both pairs are lost or damaged, wear the darkest sunglasses you have and contact your eye doctor/clinic.
