Safety Tips for Holiday Toy Purchases
The good news is that most eye injuries can be easily prevented by following Eye Smart’s toy safety tips.
1. Make sure children have appropriate supervision when playing with potentially hazardous toys or games that could cause an eye injury
2. Avoid purchasing toys with sharp, protruding or projectile parts.
3. Keep toys that are made for older children away from younger children
4. If your child experiences an eye injury from a toy, seek immediate medical attention from an ophthalmologist.

Four ways costume contacts can ruin your vision.
1. Scratches- the size of the contact lens is not fitted to your individual eye therefore it can scratch the outside of the eye.
2. Sores-costume contacts can cause corneal ulcers.
3. Both of the above can cause openings into the eye leading to infections.
4. Blindness- In extreme cases, problems from wearing costume contact lenses may lead to blindness or require surgery. For example, scarring from an infection can distort the cornea, requiring a corneal transplant to restore vision.
Avoiding allergens

If pollen is an allergen for you, avoid going outdoors as much as possible when pollen counts are highest (generally mid-morning and early evening) and when wind blows pollen around. When you are outdoors, sunglasses or eyeglasses can help to prevent pollen from getting into your eyes.
